Scallions

Scallions also known as Spring and  Shallots are part of the allium family and grown for their hollow stems and immature leaves.  You want to pick them when they are about 20 cm in length. Spring Onions are milder than normal oninons.

How to grow Scallions

Scallions are a perennial plant.  Prepare the soil with plenty of compost dug in, they like it rich. Space each plant at least 15cm apart along a row and 30cm between rows.

Culinary Uses for Spring Onions

Delicious chopped raw into salads, they can be used as a replacement for onions.  A good accompaniment to stir-fry and also they can be diced and added to soups. You can harvest them when the tops have dried and store as you would onions.
