Kingdom Plantae
Classification: Kingdom
Common names: The World of Plants, Plant Kingdom
Plantae is the name we give living organisms belonging to the plant kingdom and this includes all the plants in the world. Plants have been around for over 360 million years.Botany is the scientific study of plants and so far there are over 350,000 species of plants identified. These include seed plants, bryophytes, ferns and fern allies. Of the 350,000 species 258,650 are flowering.
The plant kingdom is further categorised into subgroups.
Most of plant classification ‘taxonomy’ is developed around the following criteria:
Plant body
Vascular system: Does the plant use a vascular system or is it like algae - no vascular system
Seed development: looking at plants that have flowers and seeds, is it seed bearing or spore bearing? and whether the seed is surrounded by a fruit
Vascular plants are also known as Tracheophytes. This grouping then would include Pteridophyta, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms
The Kingdom can be divided into the following divisions:
Thallophyta - Algae, non vascular & grow in specialised habitats like snow, ice, hot water.
Bryophyta - simple, primitive land plants - includes mosses and liverworts. They lack a vascular transport system.
Pteridophyta - This division includes ferns and horsetails. They have roots, leaves and no flowers or seeds. They have vascular systems.
Spermatophyte - Plants that produce seeds. All seed bearing plants. They produces seets, have roots, stems, leaves. They also have a highly developed vascular system.
Gymnosperms - flowering plants that produce cones and seeds. Cycads & conifers
Angiosperms - flowering plants
